Smoke Gray Chevrolet Paint Restoration — Houston TX
Smoke gray and charcoal metallic finishes are among the most demanding colors to restore correctly. The fine metallic flake suspended in the gray base has to be applied at precise angles and speeds to achieve the depth and reflectance that makes smoke gray look the way it does from the factory. Too fast and the flake orients randomly; too slow and it flops flat. When this Chevy arrived at our Houston shop, the existing smoke gray finish had suffered significant UV hazing — the dark color absorbs heat aggressively, which accelerates clear coat failure — and there were areas on the roof and hood where the clear had already peeled completely, exposing the basecoat to direct sun and moisture.
This project required a complete exterior restoration: strip the compromised finish, treat surface rust at the hood edge and window trim seams, apply a sealing primer followed by high-build urethane primer, block sand flat, and then execute the smoke gray respray under controlled booth conditions with careful attention to metallic flake orientation. The result is documented in 25 project photos — from assessment day through final delivery.
Dark metallic colors like smoke gray demand more precision than solid colors, and that precision is something our Houston shop has been delivering since 2010. Whether you're dealing with clear coat failure, rust damage, collision repair, or simply want your Chevy — or any vehicle — looking the way it did on day one, we have the equipment and the process to make it happen.

Restoring Smoke Gray Metallic — What Makes It Different
Gray and charcoal metallic finishes require specific techniques at every stage. Here's exactly how we handled this Chevy.
Assessment & Metallic Damage Analysis
The first step was a thorough assessment of the existing finish — paint depth readings to understand how much material remained, UV damage mapping, and a close inspection of how the metallic flake had been affected by the years of Texas sun exposure. Smoke gray tends to show UV damage differently from lighter colors; the bleaching effect is more subtle, but the loss of metallic depth and clear coat haze is unmistakable under proper lighting. We documented all of it before removing anything.
Paint Removal, Rust Treatment & Metal Prep
The damaged finish was stripped from all affected panels. At the hood forward edge and around the windshield trim — the two areas showing the most rust penetration — we ground back to clean bare metal and treated the exposed steel with a two-stage rust treatment: chemical converter first, then an epoxy primer sealer over the treated area before any high-build primer was applied. This is the right way to handle rust if you want a repair that lasts years, not months.
Priming & Block Sanding for Metallic Application
Metallic finishes are unforgiving of surface imperfections — the fine flake particles in the basecoat catch light from every angle, which means any low spot, fill mark, or surface texture in the primer layer will be visible in the final finish. We applied multiple coats of high-build urethane primer and spent significant time block sanding every panel by hand, working through progressively finer grits until each surface was perfectly flat and ready for basecoat.
Smoke Gray Color Matching & Respray
The factory smoke gray color code was scanned using a spectrophotometer and adjusted for the vehicle's aged paint state. Our paint technician applied the metallic basecoat in our climate-controlled spray booth using measured gun distances and consistent overlap patterns to ensure uniform metallic orientation across every panel. Inconsistent metallic orientation — visible as light and dark patches that shift as you move around the vehicle — is the most common flaw in metallic resprays done without proper technique. That doesn't happen here.
Clear Coat, Polish & Delivery
Premium 2K urethane clear coat was applied in multiple passes and allowed to cure in the heated booth. After cure, the finish was wet-sanded and polished through a multi-stage machine polishing process to achieve maximum depth in the smoke gray metallic — the characteristic deep reflectance that makes this color look like it has layers. The completed vehicle was inspected under high-intensity and raking lighting before delivery, with all results documented in the 25-photo project record.
Why Professional-Grade Equipment Matters
A smoke gray metallic respray attempted with basic spray equipment will almost always show flake orientation problems — areas where the metallic looks splotchy, too silvery, or too dark relative to the adjacent panels. Achieving a correct, consistent metallic application requires a professional HVLP gravity-feed gun with the right tip size, controlled ambient temperature and humidity, and a technician who knows how this specific formula needs to be applied. That's what we bring to every job in our Houston shop.
